DSP of the Month: Donna Printup
Congratulations to Donna Printup, January’s Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Month!
Donna has been in the DSP field for 24 years. Donna has worked for ECI Inc. for the last 13 years.
«I decided to be a DSP because I wanted to be a part of something that means the most to me,» Donna said. «I have always been passionate about caring for others who have a hard time caring for themselves. Working in this field means I can make a difference in someone else’s life. I’ve been with ECI for 13 years because not only is it a wonderful work but also values clients and teamwork!»
Valita Hurst, BCBDD SSA II, said Donna is a phenomenal DSP and has been instrumental in keeping one of her clients, Jamie, active in the community.
«Donna has helped Jamie participate in all the things that he likes to do such as, softball, basketball, routine Taco Bell runs, daily walks in his neighborhood, church on Sunday, and dances,» Valita said. «Donna and Jamie have a great relationship. He respects and trusts her. He knows what to expect from her. Donna always makes sure that any new staff working with Jamie knows his likes, dislikes, and his routines. Routines are huge for Jamie.»
Donna met Jamie 24 years ago and said because of that he is more like family to her than just an individual she cares for.
«The memories I share with Jamie, the growth he has made over the years, and seeing him participate in activities that he enjoys has been my biggest reward,» Donna said. «It is very important for me to see him be a part of community. Seeing him with friends and others being social makes me so proud. He is making big strides in his life. He’s an amazing man!»
Valita said Donna is a strong advocate for Jamie and has a very good relationship with Jamie’s family.
«There was a time a couple of years ago when Jamie was having some health issues, and it took a while for his physicians to figure out what was wrong,» Valita said. «Donna was persistent in following up with the doctors. She knew something was wrong even though Jamie couldn’t tell anyone what was bothering him. Donna wouldn’t give up until the doctors figured it out. Jamie ultimately ended up having surgery on his back. Donna didn’t give a second thought about going to the hospital with him and helping him through his recovery. She will often volunteer to take on extra hours or volunteer to work when other staff might want to be home with their children for holidays. Donna is the glue that holds our team together! She is 100 % Team Jamie.»
